Spooky tales

* Apropos the editorial,‘Spooks in Raj Bhavan’ (IE,April 30),the Congress seems to forget that constitutional appointees like governors should be endorsed by allies as well. The list of recent governors shows that most of them are Congress loyalists or former members of the country’s security establishment, such as the new governor of Goa,B.V. Wanchoo, and the current West Bengal governor,M.K. Narayanan. It would be more appropriate to have academics in the country’s Raj Bhavans.

* The editorial ‘Spooks in Raj Bhavan’ has rightly questioned the practice of choosing “loyalists” of the ruling party and former officers in the intelligence establishment for the post of governor. It is unfortunate that the Congress-led Central government still bestows governorships as a form of patronage. This became evident when Aziz Qureshi thanked Sonia Gandhi for his appointment as governor of Uttarakhand. He implied that his “loyalty to the Nehru-Gandhi family” had paid off.

Good sport

* There have been contrasting views on the decision to nominate Sachin Tendulkar to the Rajya Sabha. Recently,Shiv Sena’s Bal Thackeray commented that a photograph of Tendulkar would be enough, there was no need to draw a cartoon (‘Sachin’s nomination is Congress’s “dirtiest play”: Thackeray’,IE,April 29). Tendulkar’s detractors feel he would not be able to contribute much as a member of the Rajya Sabha, that he will be yet another parliamentarian paid by us to do nothing. Tendulkar does not seem to be aware of what he is getting into by accepting the appointment.

Matter of dignity

* Merely being a woman, having a minority tag or close ties with any political party cannot recommend anyone for the post of president (‘Prez poll: Congress reaches out to DMK,Antony says talks “fruitful’’’,IE,April 30). The nominee should have extraordinary personal achievements,a vision for the present and for the future of the nation, and the ability to maintain the impartiality and dignity required of the august office. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is the most suitable candidate among the names in circulation.

* Montek Singh Ahluwalia’s comment, that tea will be made the national drink of India,is absurd (‘Tea partiers’,IE,April 23). India is a diverse country and it is incomprehensible that one national drink should be imposed on it. Many in the south like their coffee while in the north, tea is preferred. Ahluwalia wanted to commemorate the 212th birth anniversary of the first Assamese tea planter,Maniram Dewan. But why must history be excavated to create controversies in the present?
