Solo flight

This refers to your report ‘Doubting Thomas not your job: Govt to SC’ (IE,January 18). From here,it’s a short distance for the Union government to tell the apex court that it cannot adjudicate on government matters. The affidavit shows how this government, pretending to fight graft,is ridiculing the very idea of “public interest”. It has the audacity to claim “consensus” is not necessary, and that it’s not necessary to respect the views of the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha. Of course, there’s a general feeling across the nation that we have a prime minister of impeccable integrity, yet he may not always mean what he says.

Protecting pilgrims

I think the Sabarimala incident is an unfortunate addition to similar incidents that have taken place at Mandhar Devi in Maharashtra,Naina Devi and Chamunda Devi in Himachal, and Pratapgarh in UP — where scores of people have died due to administrative negligence (‘Drawing near in faith’,IE,January 17). Panic magnifies the loss of life. Stampedes can be prevented by adopting simple measures. Permanent barricades along tracks and shelters, separation of entry and exit paths, deployment of volunteers to guide pilgrims, adequate wireless communication with security personnel, timely coordination between local administration and security agencies and rehearsals of emergency plans are some such measures.

Spot the difference

The talk about a cabinet reshuffle is just hype to divert attention from the runaway inflation (‘Big Four unlikely to be affected in ‘minor’ Cabinet reshuffle’,IE,January 18). It will turn out to be a damp squib. Coalition compulsions, the dominance of a single family and the vested interests of the old guards will not allow the prime minister to replace his incompetent colleagues or select new, promising faces.

Pull it down

I welcome Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh’s “order” to demolish the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society’s building in Colaba within three months. It’s the victory for poor citizens and a big lesson for the bigwigs. This shows that it is not just the houses of the poor that can be demolished but even the rich can face the music.

Brief joy

The joy of activists over Jairam Ramesh’s decision on Adarsh may prove to be shortlived. The residents are already pleading in court. The society has every right to approach the courts for necessary relief. Either party can then appeal to a higher court. This way,the case can drag on for decades. By then, all would be forgiven and forgotten.
