The prime minister’s concern is a timely wake-up call (‘China has beaten us in science: PM’,IE,January 4). But a mere increase in R&D spend is not enough. It will have to be accompanied by a massive effort to generate a scientific spirit among future scientists. Science can’t be bought in the marketplace. It has to be developed as a habit, which in time becomes a passion,so much so that it compelled Montesquieu to give up office and study the governance of human societies and give to the world The Spirit of the Laws. It was this work which gave us the concept of separation of powers.

APROPOS ‘Calculate the risk’ (IE,January 6),the events that unfolded in Yiwu were taken seriously by the ministry of external affair — and rightly so. Economic ties with China are significant for India, but that should not stop the government from looking after the interests of its people. If common people must have faith in the government, then it was necessary for the latter to handle with sensitivity the case of mistreatment of traders and give a strong signal to China that the status of the world’s second largest economy does not give it the licence to misbehave.

Ageing row

The army chief should go quietly and without creating any more fuss. He has to maintain the honour of an organisation that he has served for long in an exemplary manner. For one man’s honour,we cannot set a wrong precedent. Others may point out instances where something similar was not done for officers in the lower rung and may question whether there should be a different set of rules for the chief.

False friends

THIS refers to ‘With allies like these’ (IE,January 6). The TMC and the Congress never had cordial relations. Now,over the proposal to rename Indira Bhavan in Kolkata, swords have been drawn in the open by these two parties. The Congress needs the TMC so the former will have to show some restraint and learn to treat its ally with dignity.

THE Kushwaha episode has boomeranged on the BJP in a most crucial pre-poll moment (‘Look who’s hiring,’ IE,January 5). Whether it fields Kushwaha as a candidate or not is beside the point. After all the moralising over the Lokpal bill and Advani’s Jan Chetana Yatra aimed at promoting the BJP’s clean image,it is now floundering to explain its acceptance of Kushwaha & Co. They seem rather confused now as different voices are emerging from within their ranks, either defending or condemning the move.
