Privacy and freedom, being subjective concepts, are open to different interpretations. That is why the rich consider the unique ID project an infringement on their privacy, while the poor look at it as a means to facilitate their mobilisation and enable service-delivery. The government has not made the UID mandatory,so the concerns of the rich have been addressed to some extent. As a large section of our population is going to benefit,we must encourage the move, rather than make premature judgments.

After the verdict

The cat is finally out of the bag and the split decision suggests that it’s a tie — no winners and no losers (‘Ram stays, split Ayodhya land: HC’,IE,October 1). The Ayodhya verdict is bound to be challenged in the Supreme Court. The media hype over the judgment was unwarranted. The streets were deserted as if we were at war. People were afraid and stayed indoors as if the world was going to end. The communal fabric of our country is strong. It’s the politicians who are the most feared ones on this score as they believe in divide-and-rule,which helps votebank politics. The majority of Indians were not even born when this controversy peaked. How are they going to be affected by the judgment now? People should show maturity and build a multi-faith place of worship at the disputed site. Perhaps a first-rate hospital can be built above it to. In unity lies India’s strength. Sentiments should take a backseat, while we concentrate on our country’s growth.

* The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court’s verdict on the land title dispute in Ayodhya has relied on the historic fact that both the Hindu and Muslim communities had been offering their prayers,in amity,at the spot. Notwithstanding the order to divide the land among the three parties, the verdict has made it possible for both communities to continue worship therein in future, under a just arrangement to be put

in place within three months. This is a win-win-win situation for all the three parties. Indeed this verdict has opened up the possibility for the different communities to come together at all places of worship.

* The judges have done a fairly good job. No court verdict, howsoever fair, can satisfy all parties. Prima facie, this one appears to satisfy most shades of opinion. Let’s not nurse grudges and impede the nation’s progress. It’ll be best for the contending parties to bury the hurt and grudges,if any, once and for all. The verdict should be accepted with grace. In any case, the portals of the apex court are always open to all citizens of this country.
