Poll dance

This refers to the editorial ‘Manufactured slump’ (IE,March 1). With the UPA government on crutches and thanks to allies like Mamata Banerjee, who act more like the opposition, its fate and strategy are directly linked to how the Congress fares on March 6 in the five states where elections just concluded. If it doesn’t do well, chances are there will hardly be any policy reform.

Stumbling blocks

IN ‘What happened at Koodankulam’ (IE,March 1),G. Balachandran’s view stands out for the balanced and relatively matured stance it presented. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is a knowledgeable economist. He will not make unnecessary remarks. While admitting there are many NGOs which work for genuine social causes, the entire NGO system is a multi-crore business in India. Let the investigative agencies bring out the truth.

Theirs faithfully?

APROPOS the editorial ‘Again the rollback’ (IE,February 29),the Congress has lost its credibility in states ruled by non-UPA parties. They fear that, with the NCTC,the Congress will misuse the agency’s powers. Assurances from the Congress that it doesn’t intend to compromise the federal structure of the polity will not cut much ice. The party will have to take concrete steps, say,by making the CBI autonomous,to win over non-Congress governments.

Bold,beautiful

THIS refers to ‘An award and after’ (IE,March 1). Hats off to Reema Abbasi for her bold article. Crimes against women should be stopped at any cost. Saving Face, apart from the Oscar, deserves many more awards.

Crocodile tales

THE report ‘Elusive crocodile caught from Khadkwasla’ (IE,March 1),evokes memories of Nessie, the “Loch Ness Monster” of Scotland. While Nessie still remains shrouded in mystery, its Khadakwasla counterpart which robbed the thrill of river adventures has now been captured. The incident reminds one of an essay by Bertrand Russell. Titled “On Comets”,it lamented the fast-receding mysteries from the midst of mankind because of the demystifying actions of advancing science.

APROPOS ‘Board sends tough message,‘rebel’ Sehwag is dropped’ (IE,March 1),any player who is not performing does not deserve to remain in any team.
