PM to Prez

* There is a debate going on about India’s next president. The solution is probably not all that complicated. Why not Manmohan Singh? He is from the Congress,is non-controversial,has an international standing, and most other parties would have no reason to object to his candidature as he is universally regarded as honest, erudite and correct. Pranab Mukherjee would be the right man to replace him as PM. He gets the government and party out of every spot and is seen as very competent,so he will be able to change the perception that the government is indecisive.

* INSTAL Manmohan Singh as president. He is respected all over the world as a statesman and a first-class economist. He would bring much-needed dignity to the office of president. He may even be elected unopposed. The baton of prime ministership should be passed on to Pranab Mukherjee, who could do wonders, especially with Singh available for consultation.

Union of states

* THIS refers to ‘Federal & political’ (IE,May 4). The Centre’s proposal to include DGPs and the state anti-terrorism squads in its operational strategy is a pragmatic move at this juncture, when much hue and cry is being made by some states about the Centre infringing on their federal rights. Today, the main concern is to fight terrorism. There is an urgent need to come together politically and reinforce the NCTC at the earliest so that another 26/11 does not occur.

Justice delayed

* APROPOS the editorial ‘In your court now’ (IE,May 3),for 12 long years justice has not been delivered in the Pathribal case. Now the Supreme Court has put the onus back on the army. It is up to the latter to decide how to punish the army personnel accused in the case. Given that the army managed to stonewall any real progress for over a decade, one wonders how many more years will it take for a closure of the case.

* Apropos ‘Yoga is as yoga does’ (IE,May 4),when it comes to practising yoga, asanas are not the only thing to be followed to keep the body fit. And when it comes to preaching about yoga, you have to keep in mind the essence of the old practice. Yoga is both physical regimen and spiritual enlightenment. However, the spiritual aspect seems to have been replaced by its commercial value. Things do change with time but one has to keep the heart of it intact. Only then can all forms, even abridged ones, flourish.
