Pilot priorities

The idea of piloting CCT projects in elitist areas undermines the very purpose of such projects. It’s like measuring the rainfall at Mawsynram for irrigation projects in Rajasthan. Such pilots should be done in the remotest areas so that all delivery hurdles can be identified and a more pragmatic timeline set. Piloting in elite areas, along with delivery hurdles,is responsible for violated deadlines. Had there not been delivery hurdles,we won’t have arrived at CCT and UID,whose primary purpose is to facilitate financial inclusion and weed out irregularities.

This refers to ‘Lazy,Dangerous’ (IE,February 25). The Orissa government will be pleased it has finally secured the release of R.V. Krishna from the Maoists. But at what cost, they should ask themselves. Every year, millions are spent and many lives are sacrificed in this battle against the Maoists, but every time this bloody struggle reaches a point of significance, the vicious cycle of arrest-abduction-release comes back to haunt the establishment. We need to work out a mechanism to deal with such situations.

Plan B

It is easy to criticise the Orissa government’s handling of Krishna’s abduction (‘Lazy,Dangerous’,IE,February 25). But was there any alternative? The government can either break or bend the Maoists. The former option will result in a bloodbath and more misery for the tribals. Bending them and channelling their energies towards development without wounding their pride will work better.

Deluded senility

Even amidst violence and a bloodbath in Libya,it’s impossible to miss the dark humour dripping from the rants of a megalomaniac well into senility (‘Gaddafi unplugged’,IE,February 24). Look at the sophistry of his speech: “If I were a president,I would have thrown my resignation in your faces but I am a leader of a revolution and leaders of revolutions do not quit.” That’s an innovative way of clutching on to something you deny having in the first place! Also: “You can demonstrate peacefully as long as your demonstrations are in protest of what is happening in Gaza or Iraq, not against what is happening in your own country.” His mafia-style gesture of offering his hand to a supporter for kissing indicates he still considers himself

Muammar Gaddafi is perhaps preparing for a bigger massacre. The lives of all protesters are in danger, but no one is coming to help them. Where are human right activists? Where is the UNSC? Merely condemning Gaddafi is not enough.
