Indians are known to have a fondness for good food.
* Indians are known to have a fondness for good food. With the passing of Tarla Dalal,we have lost a culinary giant who was a household name in our country. Dalal was the Sachin Tendulkar of the food industry. Soft spoken and kind, she penned numerous reasonably-priced cookbooks. Her simple and innovative recipes thrilled the tastebuds. It is no wonder that the government thought it fit to honour her with a Padma Shri in 2007. Dalal was Indias first celebrity chef and an innovative entrepreneur. She will be missed terribly.

Not either-or
* This refers to ISROs PSLV delivers a near perfect launch of Indias first Mars mission (IE,November 6). The critics of ISROs Mangalyaan, who asserted that it was an unnecessary burden on the exchequer in a country where even basic facilities like healthcare and education are not adequately available, put forth a flawed argument. Technological development need not be sacrificed in order to improve social indicators. The two are not antagonistic to each other. In fact,if India is able to prove its scientific capability,it may help to expand
its hi-tech exports to the
rest of the world. Improvements in the field of
space technology can be of direct relevance to agriculture, defence and security, the environment and disaster mitigation.

Pain of insecurity
* This refers to Modi being targeted,up his security: BJP to govt (IE,November 7). The BJP must bear in mind that Narendra Modi is not the prime minister. This controversy is unnecessary and a desperate attempt to attack the UPA. Its a cruel irony that so many innocent people lost their lives due to the riots in Gujarat in 2002. The breakdown of law and order, and the lack of adequate security for citizens, were squarely the chief ministers fault. Its interesting that that very chief minister is now exposed to the feeling of insecurity. In spite of all
this,Modi must certainly
get adequate security as per the existing rules.

None of the above
* This refers to The third option by Siddharth Narrain (IE,November 7). It is sad that despite Indias high ideals of personal liberty and equality,it has failed miserably when it comes to protecting gender and sexual minorities. Indeed,it is time that the difference between sex (a biological construct) and gender (a social construct) be reflected in our laws, policies and rules. Germanys move to allow a childs sex to be unspecified is progressive and must be replicated in India.
