Opinion Nobel path
It is a moment for all women to rejoice in. Karmans work especially is an answer to the Wests prejudices about Muslim women.
Nobel path
The Nobel peace prize has been won by three women this year Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, her compatriot and peace activist Leymah Gbowee and Tawakul Karman of Yemen. They have won the peace Nobel for promoting womens rights and freedom. It is a moment for all women to rejoice in. Karmans work especially is an answer to the Wests prejudices about Muslim women. Muslims, meanwhile, should look up to Karman as an exemplar and encourage their daughters to learn and work and move towards gender equality and empowerment.

Nick of time
THE intelligence and security agencies are generally criticised for their failure in subverting terror attacks, but this time the special cell of the Delhi police and the Haryana police deserve praise for their alertness and timely action in tracking and seizing a car laden with explosives, timers and detonators in Ambala (Lashkar-Babbar Khalsa plot: Explosive-laden car meant for Diwali attack in Delhi, say cops,IE,October 14). Had the perpetrators succeeded,it would have been a black Diwali in Delhi. The emergence of the Babbar Khalsa and its Lashkar connection must be a matter of grave concern for the Centre.

Time bound
THIS refers to The closing of our minds (IE,October 13). The author has ignored two important points. The essay by Ramanujan was prescribed by the academic council of Delhi University and the department of history for a limited period up to 2009. The decision was taken by the academic council in a democratic manner after prolonged discussion and on merit, considering all aspects of the case. It should have been automatically removed from the courses when its time lapsed. To question the decision of an authorised, competent body of the university cannot be justified on any ground.

Crack the whip
THIS refers to The goon squad (IE,October 14). First Prashant Bhushan was attacked, then there was another attack on Bhushans supporters by Sri Ram Sene members. The time has come to be strict with such hooligans.

Love in traffic
INDIA is boasting about its robust economic growth, the number of vehicles has gone up,traffic on the roads is bumper-to-bumper and tempers have become short. In heavily industrialised Ludhiana,in the absence of proper planning, something is dying on the roads every day. Thats love. Thanks to utter madness on the roads of this pollution-choked city,no young man can promise his girlfriend that he will meet her at a certain hour at a certain place. Is there a way to book politicians,road-safety engineers,traffic-regulating cops and others who are shirking their responsibility for the first-degree murder of young love?
