No helping hand

* This refers to ‘In Jaipur tunnel, girl, mother bleed to death as motorists ignore cries for help’ (IE,April 16). Precious lives were lost because of the shocking apathy of passers-by,who ignored the cries for help. This growing callousness must be arrested and steps initiated to sensitise the public so that injured persons can get timely medical help. This tragic incident may serve as a wake up call. It is a moral obligation for passers-by to take accident victims to the nearest hospital. Doctors should also treat such patients immediately. Legal procedures can wait. The police must assure citizens that they will not be harassed for helping out. The government should lay down guidelines for the legal process in such cases. Saving lives must be made a priority.

* IT IS shameful that victims of a road accident cried for help in the middle of a Jaipur tunnel and nobody stopped to help, though several cars and trucks had passed that way. Such behaviour may be attributed to the fear of harassment by the police. This image of the police needs to be changed. They must be reasonable and polite with members of the public who help victims and report accidents. This incident underlines the need for police reforms. The vehicle that knocked over the two-wheeler must also be arrested and face charges.

Neighbourly ties

* THIS refers to the editorial ‘Give and take’ (IE,April 16). Keeping up a steady flow of trade with Pakistan is more important than the volume of the trade. In this context,it is critical to have a civilian government in Pakistan that supports the idea and encourages businessmen involved in trading. As trade ties are strengthened,Pakistan will have to start looking at India through a different lens.

Shadow play

* THE BJP and the JD(U) need each other (‘Poked over silence during Gujarat riots,Nitish hits back at BJP,says law and order state’s responsibility’,IE,April 16). But each has resorted to posturing, keeping in mind the approaching elections. The two parties have been partners for nearly two decades. The JD(U) did not break off ties even after the violence of Gujarat 2002. Its stance now seems hypocritical. It is also true that,in spite of Modi trumpeting his achievements as chief minister, the riots of 2002 will continue to haunt him. The twist in the tale lies in the JD(U) giving the BJP time till the end of the year to declare its prime ministerial candidate. Even a day is a long time in politics. This current bout is nothing but shadow boxing between partners who have different constituencies to address.
