Theres merit in C. Raja Mohans idea that the government should evolve an integrated strategy linking Pakistan,China and the US instead of a paired dialogue with each (The battle for Pakistan,IE,June 21). No doubt, its a Herculean task. What more should India do to outreach Pakistan when their response is singularly unhelpful? Can India convince the US and China about its sincerity in contributing to Pakistans future without moving away from its position on Kashmir? Will Chinas ambitions not be an impediment to Indias uninhibited growth? However, these obstacles can be overcome if India re-engineers its neighbourhood policy to suit the new geopolitics. This would mean sacrificing some long-held positions and bargaining for new ones. This would also require a better equation with the opposition and more transparency than the UPA government has shown.

Bihar unravelling
This refers to the editorial Free association (IE,June 22). Both the BJP and JD(U) are responsible for the current mess. It seems Nitish Kumar overreacted on the advertisement showing him and Narendra Modi together. He not only cancelled the proposed dinner for the BJP leadership but also returned the amount given by Modi in flood aid. This has put the alliance on a sticky wicket. One wishes votebank politics didnt weigh on Nitish Kumars mind because he cant deny his association with the BJP for the last so many years a BJP Narendra Modi is very much a part and parcel of.

Nitish Kumar has unnecessarily created trouble for the JD(U)-BJP alliance, which has worked for the last four and half years in Bihar and done some good work. Over the years,Nitish has earned a reputation for meaning business. However,he would be grossly mistaken in thinking that he can do a Naveen Patnaik by breaking with the BJP. In Orissa, the CM had no such challenges as posed by Lalu Prasads RJD and Ram Vilas Paswans LJP in Bihar. No party in Bihar can come to power alone.

Urban moves
This refers to Municipal musings (IE,June 21). Urbanisation has moved much faster than anticipated. Yoginder K. Alagh proves that Indian agriculture no longer remains a wealth-creating occupation; in fact it fails to provide subsistence living. Only cash crops which can be exported may have some future,if the government allows export, and that too for rich farmers who can use the latest technology and compete in the export market. Migration is the only solution available for the rest. But within India this growing urbanisation has created a number of problems. Small towns like Nasik may be a great place for a morning walk; sadly, they cannot fulfil the needs of safe drinking water, sanitation, health and housing facilities for growing populations.
