This refers to Saubhik Chakrabarti’s ‘Filmneeti’ (IE,June 2). The film Rajneeti was in trouble and became a victim of the ruling party’s whims. Earlier too, films based on politicians’ lives or inspired by such were in trouble like Aandhi and Kissa Kursi Kaa. In fact,a film never reflects real life’s complete incidents. It’s always more a fictional work and that’s how everyone knows it. Then, where is the danger of misrepresentation of facts?

Finally, there is the censor board to chop off objectionable scenes — not in the public interest — but in the changed times, censorship rules must also change,to allow the screening of bold themes and more realistic movies.

Saving Manipur

The editorial ‘SOS from Manipur’ (IE,June 1) was timely, given the tough time the people of Manipur are going through. Manipur is the farthest nook of mainland India’s consciousness. Its being blocked out doesn’t evoke any ready response because of the “zero impact” it has on the rest of the country. It’s not only Manipur, but for that matter almost all the northeastern states that often remain cut off due to their geographical location. So it’s time the Union government rescued Manipur from the blockade and also resolved the dispute with the NSCN.

Eye on Israel

This refers to the editorial ‘Eye on Gaza’ (IE,June 2).

You are right in saying that “Israel’s tendency to shoot itself in the foot will not help its security.” But then, there’s its blind benefactor, the US. See how equivocal the world’s sole superpower is when it talked of the “importance of learning all the facts and circumstances around the tragic events…” Had it been any other country, the US would have asked rightaway for UN sanctions. Israel’s arrogance vis-a-vis the Palestinians can be checkmated if the Arab world closes ranks against Israel just for once, and the US cannot have even a drop of oil from the Middle East. Till then,Palestinians are condemned to suffer.

It’s easy to blame Israel every time an incident like Monday’s happens. But the fact is Israel had warned people not to venture into Gaza or take materials without inspection. This forewarning was not heeded by the so-called activists. They had in mind a confrontation with the IDF which would automatically lead to a consolidation of support for Palestinians. This is hardly a peace initiative. Taking “construction material” is not a peace manoeuvre — an impoverished population needs food and water; not cement, steel and blue metal, that can be used for construction projects and perhaps even Hamas’s rockets. Which country in the world would behave differently from Israel under the circumstances?
