• We have lost a great Indian in the demise of Jyoti Basu. He was a great patriot, great democrat, great parliamentarian and great source of inspiration. Basu has made momentous contributions to public life and remained a role model for Indian politicians. One would remember him for his key role in bringing together non-Congress state governments and parties, laying the ground for future national alliances. He was indeed a positive politician with a vision of the future. Basu will be best remembered as a mass leader. His demise leaves a void very difficult to fill.

Ahmedabad

• With the demise of Jyoti Basu,India has lost one its tallest leaders whose ideas and ideals changed people’s view of the communist party in India. Basu was a deserving leader to be prime minister,a job that nearly came his way in 1996,but the damage was done by his party. After the CPI split in 1964,political pundits could have formed different views about the CPM’s survival but Basu’s political farsightedness made it a power to count.

• Jyoti Basu was the quintessential politician as also a genuine proponent of communist ideology. He deftly combined the best of both communism and parliamentary politics and held a near imperial sway over Bengal, for 23 years as CM and then as its patriarch. His powerful presence on the Indian political scene was such that the Union government, irrespective of which party was in power, paid due heed to his views.

Prime example

• In a country mired in the quagmire of superstition,Jyoti Basu has set a remarkable example by donating his body to medical research. Basu’s marvellous example is sidelined by a media that thrives on superstition, and of course politicians dread discussing the issue. As an ordinary Indian,I’m immensely inspired by Basu and have already committed to donating my eyes on my death.

For the forces

• This refers to ‘Our harmed forces’. Shekhar Gupta has raised some pertinent questions about the inordinate delay in acquisition of much needed defence procurements. It goes without saying that the nation can’t afford a lackadaisical approach to security. In an era that calls for quick decisions, uninspiring political leadership, such as A.K. Antony’s that wishes to play for a draw, must rise to the occasion. The Indian army enjoys the reputation of one the best armed forces in the world. In all fairness, every Indian can rely on our armed forces but not on the political class. The government should ensure that their interests are properly served and they be not made to act like a sarkari department.
