Make amends

Shekhar Gupta’s ‘Raja in jail, entire UPA in handcuffs’ (IE,February 5) served the need of the hour by telling both the Congress and the government that they need to march in lockstep to make the UPA complete its term, let alone aspire for a third consecutive term. So far,the party has been leading the executive by the nose but has no hesitation to leave it to fend for itself when in high water, mostly because of its faulty navigation. The court judgments on the telecom sector have given the UPA a much-needed breather. The government would be foolish to use this respite for celebration and not introspection.

Cleaning up

THIS refers to the editorial ‘Clearing the air’ (IE,February 7). Despite the trial court’s clean chit to Home Minister P. Chidambaram, the opposition will not stop using this issue as grist for its political mill. For the BJP,it is a handy tool to beat the UPA with. So that it’s not dogged by controversies in future, the government, while handling the compulsions of coalition politics, should avoid pitfalls where mud sticks.

Behind Raja

Apropos ‘Clearing the air’,Subramaniam Swamy’s petition cannot be brushed aside as “political”. The government has been arguing A. Raja is the sole culprit in spectrum allotment. The Supreme Court also blamed Raja. The documents Swamy submitted to the trial court,to prove the involvement of P. Chidambaram, were conveniently ignored by the CBI. Now the court has ruled Raja was not alone in decision-making.

Leadership skill

IT’s heartening to see India finally finding its feet in the voting echelons of the UNSC (‘Stand on Syria’,IE,February 6). Besides the UNSC,India also holds an observer status in the Arab League, and ergo,a responsibility to react to its joint decisions. Peaceful measures through negotiations having failed,India could no longer seek refuge in the “non-interference” principle as Syria implodes. India should leverage its diplomatic ties with Russia to break the deadlock and rally support for a key international intervention in a humanitarian crisis.

Caste test

SINCE Independence, the mindset of the government couldn’t move beyond considering reservations as the only tool for the uplift of Dalits. But Dalits have now identified the real mantra for their uplift — embracing the dignity of their caste instead of feeling embarrassed about it. The caste system is very hard

to remove, only the hierarchical gaps can be reduced. But the policy of reservation works in the opposite direction.
