The supreme talent of gifted players like Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo will be a feast for the eyes.

This refers to the editorial ‘His opening’ (IE, June 12). Spelling out his vision for taking everyone along, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s maiden speech in the Lok Sabha was riveting and reassuring. He exuded hope. He made it amply clear that he wants to reach out to the opposition to put India back on track. Devoid of hubris, Modi came out as a sombre and accommodating leader, more than willing to incorporate good suggestions from the opposition. He reiterated his party’s commitment to fulfilling people’s aspirations. Captivating oratorical skills aside, the real test for Modi and his government is yet to come. He has to walk the talk, which will mean taking some hard decisions, like doing away with the subsidy culture to contain the fiscal deficit.

Bonsai party

This refers to the editorial ‘Righting the Left’ (IE, June 12). An inclusive dispensation requires a definite tilt towards the left. But in today’s global economy, growth and development are the buzzwords, sustained by a swing to the right. But the Left’s West Bengal experiment, in its later phases, was far from sympathetic towards class struggle. It degenerated into a collaborationist dispensation and was an instrument for crushing people’s resistance movements. It went overboard in granting competitive favours to corporate investors in the name of attracting investment. The current leadership of the CPM has managed to undo what had taken its predecessors decades to build. The Left has been reduced to a political bonsai and may well stay that way for a long while to come.

Exciting times

This refers to ‘And we have lift-off’(IE, June 12). The beautiful game of football will be in full flow as hosts Brazil square-off with Croatia at Sao Paulo. The supreme talent of gifted players like Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo, among many others, will be a feast for the eyes. In spite of football only being popular in Europe, Latin America and African countries, the excitement that the World Cup is generating is unmatched. Amid all this, one wonders when an Indian football team will make it to the grand stage of the World Cup.

Reviving cities

Gulzar Natarajan (‘City needs a plan’, IE, June 11) presented a clear idea for the way forward for our cities. The major issue is that planners need to focus on long-term agendas and economic growth. The politicians who take decisions and the bureaucrats who implement them must be held responsible and accountable to citizens.
