Let EC be

It should be appreciated that each violation of the model code of conduct is being looked into and acted upon by the EC. The reported proposal to take power away from the EC would be a step in the wrong direction. It would enable violators of the code of conduct to get away with the violation and,if they were to win the election, they would enjoy office for a long time since matters pertaining to election disputes take a long time to be decided. Taking away the EC’s teeth is not in public interest.

Fuelling reform

HARD decisions are required to uplift our ailing economy (‘Frightening fisc,’ IE,February 24). Subsidies are becoming a big burden. Diesel and some other petroleum products should be deregulated in a time-bound manner to strengthen and stabilise the economy. Unnecessary expenditure must be curtailed to reduce the fiscal deficit. Policy reforms need to be urgently taken up before the budget to put the country on track of progress.

Payback time

THE Supreme Court has rightly slammed the Delhi Police,Baba Ramdev and his followers for creating trouble at Ramlila Ground last year. Baba Ramdev instigated the people to revolt against the government. He must also pay compensation for those who suffered.

Their lordship

UNLIKE before, court judgments today infuse hope that the government can’t get away with its intransigent ways. This is shown by the SC judgment on the use of force to disperse the people who were sleeping peacefully at Delhi’s Ramlila Ground last year. The court’s telling observations that the action demonstrated the might of the state and was an assault on the democratic values enshrined in our Constitution and a glaring example of the trust deficit between the governing and the governed, are strong words. Yet,it appears the government has not learnt any lessons as demonstrated by the arrogance displayed recently by UPA ministers when they appeared defiant in their attitude to the Election Commission.

FROM a humble potato seller,Kripashankar Singh built an empire in Mumbai, first as a minister and then as Mumbai Congress chief. The poor show of the Congress in the recent BMC elections proved his clout had diminished.

Flying low

THIS refers to ‘What Jeeja Ghosh means’ (IE,February 24). It is shameful that we still treat disabled persons like third-rate citizens, and that Ghosh was deplaned. The pilot who ordered that should be given exemplary punishment.
