* The editorial Stand on Syria (IE,February 6) has well advised India to come down on one side or another of the fence instead of sitting on it nonchalantly in the international arena. After walking on eggshells for some time, finally India has voted for the UNSC resolution on Syria. If India aspires to be a world power,it needs to be a trailblazer, not a camp follower. It must remove its blinkers to imagine for itself a bigger role in international affairs.

* The report 15-year-old boy stabs his teacher to death in Chennai classroom (IE,February 10) made for shocking reading. This ferocious culture should be put an end to.

* The report about a division bench of the Gujarat high court pulling up the Narendra Modi government for inaction says,in essence, that the court criticised the Gujarat police for intelligence failure and lack of action. Your bold type headline is not only inappropriate but shows a bias against Modis government. Everyone, including The Indian Express,is biased against Modi without giving due weight to why the riots took place. Even Modis party, the BJP,is not enthusiastic about supporting him. The Modi government did as it thought fit at the time and at the speed it was capable of. The court has done its duty by judging it as inadequate.

* Sambudha Sens’s Pip & pop (IE,February 9) showed the close association between literature written in a particular period and the prevalent forms of mass entertainment. The study of literature today is no longer an activity meant only to scrutinise the aesthetics of a particular work but is rather a task involving a lot of interdisciplinary knowledge. Whats needed in Indian universities is the creation of forums for discussion between the social sciences and literature departments.

* The BJP legislators watching pornography during an assembly session can charitably be taken as juvenile, given this day and age. The BJPs lectures on morality,be it on Valentines Day or otherwise, reveal a festering hypocrisy within. Their reluctance to let go of B.S. Yeddyurappa yet hounding the UPA 2 on corruption, covertly towing the Anna movement or the Baba Ramdev show, and leaning on the shoulders of the perennial litigant,Subramaniam Swamy,is noteworthy.
