• Just after 11 months of the Supreme Court order,Narendra Modi did well to appear before the SIT in response to Ehsan Jafri’s widow,Zakia Jafri’s appeal to the apex court. But the media is projecting Modi as if he is the only law abiding citizen and he’s doing a favour by appearing before the SIT. The media and the people should not forget that Modi is named in Zakia Jafri’s statement. The SIT chief and the court must ensure that the investigations are not derailed.

Medieval Mulayam?

• This refers to the editorial ‘Whistle blower’. The women’s bill is a landmark legislation, which aims at empowerment of women in the hitherto male dominated political arena. Mulayam Singh Yadav,it seems, lives in another century. Why is it that he chose to make such a sexist remark that smacks of chauvinism and utter disregard for women? It’s a matter of shame that while we have leading female astronauts,a lady as president and a former prime minister, people like Yadav, with their obsolete views, bring the country to disgrace.

Fighting fire

• The article ‘2 fires,2 cities,1 story’ was commendable. It gave complete information, with proactive and necessary steps to be implemented in future. Any grave incident leading to loss of life demands change. The Indian Express is doing a great job by not only highlighting the problems but also suggesting the solutions. More accountability and transparency are needed to avoid any mishap. Awareness plays a key role. Ultimately, the victims are only the citizens. The government is already taking necessary steps to bring about a change in the fire services departments, but the time has come to expedite the process, recruit and train enough staff to overcome disasters. Fire departments should be equipped with the latest technology so that in future the Kolkata and Bangalore incidents do not recur.

Lost focus

• This refers to the editorial ‘Closing time’. It seems to be of a piece with the Maharashtra government to deal only with the convenient issues to show that it works. This is evident from the fact that while the security agencies are relentlessly gunning for dancing girls working in bars and restaurants, they are dithering over what to do to control terrorist activities and rein in the pugnacious Shiv Sena and MNC. These poor and helpless girls are in the profession perhaps in the absence of a better choice. Regarding their exploitation, can the government tell in which walk of life they are safe or not exploited?
