Keep enemies closer

* THIS refers to ‘BSY raises pitch, praises Sonia,Cong’ (IE,May 14). Former Karnataka CM B.S. Yeddyurappa’s praise of Sonia Gandhi shows his true colours. His remarks are sure to damage the BJP’s reputation. This may lead to yet another change in Karnataka’s leadership. It is certainly a shot in the arm for the Congress at the expense of the BJP.

* APROPOS ‘Cabin pressure’ (IE,May 14),Air India’s problems don’t seem to be ending. The civil aviation minister has now acknowledged that the merger of AI and Indian Airlines was not a success. The strike is inflicting maximum damage because this is peak travel season. The government cannot fall back on the court to solve the problem this time. The current situation will test its crisis management skills.

* THE row in Parliament over the Ambedkar/Nehru cartoon shows our parliamentarians in a poor light (‘MPs want more cartoons out of school books’,IE,May 14). It suggests that we are no different from the fundamentalists who bayed for the blood of a Danish cartoonist. Cartoonists are meant to depict moments in history with a sense of humour. Ambedkar’s contribution to the Constitution does not need to be certified by emotional outbursts or acts of violence by so-called supporters.

* THE editorial ‘Debate vs Delete’ (IE,May 12) was right to point out that the Ambedkar cartoon had been taken out of context and misinterpreted. The cartoon was published in 1949. How is it that sentiments of Dalit leaders like Mayawati have been hurt only now? Such leaders should concentrate on working on the development of their people instead of taking umbrage at imagined insults.

* THE BCCI’s decision to revive cricketing ties with Pakistan is yet another example of the weakness that pervades Indian policy in all sectors. India seems unable to stick to its political demands. The South African cricket team was banned from world cricket during the days of the Apartheid. The ban was not lifted until Apartheid came to an end. In the current instance,Pakistan has shown scant cooperation with India after 26/11. But to India, cricket is more important than countering terrorism.

Self-defeating

* APROPOS ‘Downhill to 2014’ (IE,May 13),it seems UPA 1 was no different from UPA 2 in terms of policy initiatives. This lacuna in governance didn’t come to the fore because India was then riding the high of a booming global economy. Now that the global economy has taken a turn for the worse, “policy paralysis” has become endemic in India.
