Keep dancing

* This refers to ‘Dance no bar’ (IE,July 17). I want to state my support for the Supreme Court’s kind decision, which overturned the ban on dance bars in Maharashtra. This judgment will revive the livelihoods of the unfairly censored, underprivileged women who found themselves jobless after the ban. It is a relief to know that we have intelligent people at the top in our judiciary,in which my faith has been renewed. From now on,let’s keep moral policing at bay.

* BANNING dance bars was a classic example of the Maharashtra government’s pseudo-reformist zeal. If politicians are so keen on being moral guardians and on safeguarding the dignity of women, they could have at least provided the women, who were left distressed and unemployed because of the ban, with a rehabilitation package that would enable them to pursue alternate careers. But they didn’t,and I imagine several unemployed women must have been pushed into prostitution. The lifting of the ban on dance bars by the SC must be a relief for those whose livelihoods depended on it.

* THIS refers to ‘That familiar feeling’ (IE,July 16). The politics of aspiration has proved to be electorally successful in a nation whose politics, till a decade ago,was based on the bitter identity issues of Mandir and Mandal. Those trying to combine India’s yearning for economic dynamism with political regression will be in for a big shock at the polls. The puppy and burqa remarks point to the BJP’s attempt to ride two waves of electoral mobilisation. By relying on communally insensitive innuendos, its leaders are attempting to regain ground in the Hindi heartland; and by pointing towards the poor governance record of the UPA,they are trying to consolidate their position among the young, disgruntled and urban. I doubt such a strategy will work,as the number of young secular Indians dreaming of a strong economy far outweigh those who continue to be attached to old political values.

* THIS refers to ‘Italy PM calls for end to racist insults against first black minister’ (IE,July 16). I applaud the Italian PM for asking that action be taken against a senior leader of the Northern League, who is a former minister and has a history of making provocative statements, for his comments about a black, female minister. The former minister is reported to have said that the lady had the “features of an orangutan”. He has reportedly offered an apology, qualifying it by adding that he always compares people to animals. Seems like Narendra Modi and he have a lot in common.
