The speaker of the Karnataka assembly acted within his powers, but perhaps unwisely

The speaker of the Karnataka assembly acted within his powers, but perhaps unwisely (‘From party to Oppn,Bhardwaj has no friends’,IE,October 14). The court will rule anyway on the constitutional validity of his decisions. However, the Karnataka governor has acted beyond his mandate. He’s interfered with the speaker’s exclusive prerogative to conduct business inside the assembly. Worse,he directed the chief minister, who was declared as enjoying the confidence of the House,to seek it,inexplicably, again. He will be answerable to the president and,by extension,to the Union cabinet for his actions. What loses focus in this chaos is the actions of a controversial CM,who alone is answerable to the people of Karnataka and for whose welfare his government is supposed function. The nation needs to learn from this episode.

Karnataka’s governor has asked B.S. Yeddyurappa to seek another vote of confidence (‘Karnataka vote today, but trust on Monday’,IE,October 14). It’s a shame that the governor of the state, formerly of the Congress, has been so biased against the BJP government. Refusing to accept the results of the confidence vote taken earlier on the floor of the House,he first recommended president’s rule. After the Congress high command and the Union government refrained from following through,he changed his tune and asked for a second trust vote. By this he’s brought disgrace on a high constitutional office.

This refers to the editorial ‘Badal vs Badal’ (IE,October 14). Nothing could be more unfortunate for cash-strapped Punjab than the exit of Manpreet Badal as finance minister. No doubt, the debt waiver would have been a golden opportunity to revive the state’s economy. But it was Parkash Singh Badal’s personal arrogance that proved to be a major obstacle for Manpreet’s well-thought-out efforts at unburdening the state of its debt. It’s also sad that the SAD’s alliance partner, the BJP,didn’t support Manpreet’s reform initiatives either. But the way Manpreet Badal took on Badal Sr has shown that he’s sacrificed his post for the interest of the state.

CWG highs

It appears citizens and the media are so obsessed with what’s happening in the political arena that their attention has been diverted from India’s achievement at the Commonwealth Games. This perhaps is the path-breaking moment that should spur India to invest more in sports. What’s significant is that Indian sportswomen have had remarkable success. The CWG may have been mired in sordid controversy, but the unparalleled success of our sportspersons has more than made up for the beginnings.
