• It is understandable that the American press is very critical of Barack Obama’s China visit.

He was only too eager to please the Chinese in order to establish a strategic partnership. He stooped too low,not to conquer, but only to face ridicule back home.

It is unfortunate that to appease Beijing he was even ready to upset the Asian democracies. He was clearly outmanoeuvred in discussions on substantive issues by the Chinese who saw in him a novice in international diplomacy. In comparison,Richard Nixon, even as US vice president, had shown greater audacity in his famous “Kitchen Debate” with Nikita Khrushchev at the height of the Cold War in 1959.

Drop the show

• It is gratifying to note that The Indian Express maintains perspective. Mihir Sharma’s ‘The vanished moment’ points to the slide in Indian media and the disappearance of values among the middle class, for whom form has become more important than substance. Otherwise,in a country where every terrorist attack since 1993 has been the result of state-sponsored terror from its neighbourhood,26/11 cannot be touted as the darkest terror strike ever. The hype around 26/11 amounts to humiliation of the security forces as well the victims of all terrorist incidents prior to this attack.

Never again

• This refers to the editorial ‘Sober down’. On the first anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, many memories came back to every Indian. The Maharashtra chief minister said that now no one will dare to look at us with bad intent because we have advanced weapons. It’s the not the statement of a responsible person. Had such arms or a plan been in place earlier, today we could have had big teams of commandos for securing Mumbai.

Punishing Ajmal Kasab will be an actual tribute to victims of that attack. That’s what most Indians say,but the government is casual about it.

Meanwhile, terrorists are planning to attack India again. We hear that from the home ministry itself. But what is the government doing to protect us? Politicians’ attitude towards terror encourages terrorists to attack India.

Fresh trouble?

• Dubai’s troubles have sent shockwaves across the world. This is just the tip of the iceberg and many skeletons across world economies will be unearthed, sending markets on a jittering ride. The world is still reeling under recession and job cuts. Financial statements across global economies are unreliable. These warning signals should prompt the government to protect our economy with some tough decisions to survive the coming turmoil.
