Gag orders
This is regarding Gimmick as opposition (IE,November 23). That the BJP prefers boycotting a minister to holding him to account for alleged malfeasance,is like declaring someone guilty without trial. The party is resorting to this self-serving device either because it wants to play to the gallery or because it does not have anything substantial to corner the minister. Of course, the BJP is doing what the Congress did to George Fernandes when the NDA was in power. As the main opposition party, the BJP should allow the House to run smoothly for the sake of the people.

In a democracy there should be time, space and tolerance for discussions. Parliament is the place for peoples representatives to engage in debate for the good of the people; it is not a space for politicians to indulge in gimmickry for their own selfish interest. The BJP should not tarnish the image of the House with its petty quarrel.

Pick up the bill
Both the treasury and opposition benches should come to an understanding so that the House does not get adjourned everyday without transacting any business (Twenty-one days,IE,November 21). It is an unusual time as far as the global economy is concerned. Bills need to be passed urgently to restore the confidence of investors in our economy. Looking at how pervasive corruption is,a Lokpal bill is also needed. We need our representatives to get the work done.

Hitting a four
Mayawatis proposal to split Uttar Pradesh into four states is a high-stakes political gambit ahead of the assembly election. This is meant to cover the shortcomings of her five-year rule. Just after becoming the CM,she wanted the state to be divided into Bundelkhand,Harit Pradesh and Poorvanchal. Now,towards the end of her term, she has smartly passed a resolution in the assembly to divide UP into four. It is over to the Centre. When demands for Gorkhaland and Telangana are simmering issues, can the Centre so easily say yes to the division of UP?

Arms length
There is a lot of merit in the argument that the AFSPA should be repealed in parts of Jammu and Kashmir (Time to act is now,IE,November 22).The armed forces should maintain the territorial integrity of India, but not at the cost of human rights and lives.

The suggestion to repeal the AFSPA is based on a brief lull in militant activities in Kashmir. But it could be argued that this is a result of the armys vigil and interception. Decisions on matters of security are best left to the army.
