Opinion Duping Uncle Sam

In the three Indo-Pak wars, the only beneficiary from the American perspective is their military-industrial complex. Coming to the present,Pakistan is simply duping its benefactor. After 9/11,Colin Powell warned Pervez Musharraf that his country would be bombed back to the Stone Age if it didn’t support the US. America also entertained a false hope that Osama bin Laden would be handed over by Pakistan. The rest is history in the making. The post script to this emerging scenario will be America exiting from Afghanistan, simply saving face.

Vendors & readers

I congratulate the journalists awarded at the Ramnath Goenka Awards for Excellence in Journalism. It’s my humble suggestion to The Indian Express that they print in a series how news is gathered/ reported, edited, published or telecast, and how newspaper vendors deliver the paper to our homes — their contribution I feel is more symbolic and important. One wishes that at journalism’s award functions,a few newspaper vendors are invited, conferring life-time awards on those delivering papers for years. Some senior and committed readers could also be invited.

However, the paid news debate sounds good and sells at panel discussions; but today the virus has become so endemic,it calls for a Herculean effort to weed it out,and that can come not by resolutions or oaths, but voluntarily.

Kabul dates

That the timeline of 2011 set by Barack Obama was premature is evident from Hamid Karzai’s own projection of 2014 (‘Uncertain outcomes’,IE,July 22). Iraq, more politically mature,is finding it hard to prepare for a post-US scenario. Afghanistan,on the other hand, spent decades resisting foreign powers. In its preoccupation with insurgency and occupation,it could never evolve a semblance of national identity.

Even 2014 would appear impractical. The US,Pakistan, the Afghan government, and the Taliban, have varying goals. The odd one out is India. Except hope,it has little to contribute; and the US too is not greatly factoring in India’s role. Additionally, the Taliban have an increasing sway and would like New Delhi to be tied up with recurrent volatility along the Indo-Pak border, rather than actively participate in Afghan affairs. In this,Pakistan would be compelled to go with the Taliban,if only to buy its own peace. India must be prepared to slug it out, pursuing its long-term interests.

Unique Murali

Muttiah Muralitharan’s farewell Test match brings to an end both a brilliant career and an unexpected renaissance in spin bowling. At a critical moment, spin found a champion in Murali, who confirmed that reports of its imminent death were exaggerated (‘The bent of his mind’,IE,July 23).

Skill and perseverance brought him 800 wickets.

If it was the action alone, there would have been kids bowling like him. They must have tried; that they couldn’t is a tribute to Murali’s uniqueness.
