This refers to Ajit Kumar Doval’s ‘Complicated encounters’ (IE,August 4). What the author has said is absolutely true. Sohrabuddin, killed in an encounter by the Gujarat police,is being cast as an innocent victim of police excess, but in fact he was involved in a series of crimes not only in Gujarat but also in other states. It’s correct that unaccountable force cannot be used against anyone and the rule of law is a means to an end and not an end in itself. But the fact cannot be overlooked that criminals tend to bleed the country, and it’s under compelling circumstances that the police are required to take forceful action. If anyone is innocent, why would he figure in police records? In Mumbai too,the crime graph is well under control due to the risk taken by some encounter specialists earlier. The excessive publicity for criminals not only erodes people’s trust in governance but also demoralises the police. To create an impression that all encounters are fake is certainly a self-destructive path for any government. The best thing would be to leave such matters entirely to the judiciary.

Another way

The editorial ‘Wrong focus’ (IE,August 4) has rightly emphasised the essence of affirmative action for providing equal opportunities to disadvantaged groups as an alternative to reservations. Reserving jobs for people who’ve already obtained reservation in education, but are still unable to compete, will definitely affect merit. Hiring such individuals in the private sector will be a liability for the companies.

Reservation has become a political tool. For our progress, reservation in any form needs to be abolished. There’s need for a system wherein a bright yet economically poor person from a lower caste can compete with those from the upper castes. Instead of job reservations in the private sector,we need to equip the poor from disadvantaged groups with knowledge and job skills. They can be provided free education, food and scholarships so that they can compete with those economically better off, with better access to quality education.

D.K. Singh’s ‘After the ‘referendum” (IE,August 3) rightly said that the Congress high command cannot overlook the reversal the

party suffered in the recent Andhra by-polls. The way the TRS has handed a crushing defeat to both the Congress and the TDP proves that Telangana sentiments have not weakened. Additionally, this defeat is a clear reflection of public anger at the Congress leadership’s flip-flop on Telangana. Clearly, the by-poll result has only added to the Congress’s woes. It’s true that once the Srikrishna report is out,the state may

be on the boil again. Then, the Congress will have no choice other than offering a truce to Jagan.
