Down on the UPA

PRATAP BHANU MEHTA’S analysis of what ails the Congress (‘No more MBA politics’,IE, November 30) is timely. Is it sufficient for the head of the government to have impeccable integrity as his sole asset? I am sorry to say that UPA-II has hugely disappointed,if not let down the country. Just because it is a coalition doesn’t mean that there should be no transparency in governance. When the Congress president and her son, besides others, start praising what is so obvious — the PM’s honesty —there must be more than meets the eye. Is he is proposing he call it a day,and indirectly,is the Congress asking him not to do so?

THIS refers to your editorial ‘Hit wicket’ (IE,November 27): you have rightly questioned the BCCI for not sending a squad to China for the Asian Games. Perhaps the answer is that there was no big money involved there. Who bothers about the dignity of the country? Or a medal? What is a gold medal for cricketers? Sportspersons can do wonders for India, only if sports bodies stop playing politics with games.

THE concluding part of Ratan Tata’s interview with Shekhar Gupta ( ‘Never once in our association with Radia have we tried to subvert policies ‘,IE,November 30) carries disturbing observations. He seemed disillusioned with the government’s lack of interest in improving the investment climate of India after he was inducted into the Investment Commission. Growing Indian investment abroad is partly related to this mood of frustration at home. Although he was appreciative of Manmohan Singh’s “supportive” attitude,it hardly lessened his sadness at the absence of a proactive approach towards investment.

THIS refers to the news item ‘Tata goes to SC,Govt orders probe into leaks’ (IE,November 30) where it has been reported that the home ministry has ordered an inquiry into who leaked the recordings of the conversations between Ratan Tata and Niira Radia. That the inquiry order has been issued apparently as Tata petitions the Supreme Court shows how the UPA government is obsequious to big businessmen. Otherwise, the government should have waited for the court’s decision on the petition before issuing an order.

IF the speeches of Arundhati Roy and Syed Ali Shah Geelani were inflammatory (‘Sedition case filed against Roy,Geelani’,IE,November 30) and seditious, how would you describe the hate-India,love-Pakistan utterances of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and company? Are those not seditious? Why does the government allow them to abuse the freedom of speech? Is it because they belong to a privileged minority? What about the rights of the other minority, the Kashmiri pandits?
