Doctor policy

This refers to ‘So retro,so UPA’ (IE,April 25). One wonders why the government wants to force only doctors going abroad for higher education to return to India after completing their education. If the government wishes to prevent brain drain, this restriction should apply to students in all disciplines, especially those who have received government aid up to graduation. More importantly, the government should set up more colleges so that even if some graduates go abroad, the sheer number of those staying back should be enough to take care of our domestic needs.

THIS refers to ‘Prove Basu wrong’ (IE,April 23). Policy paralysis and governance deficit are the worst outcomes of the current political turmoil. The industrial sector cannot attain expected growth unless there is sufficient rise in income levels, savings and capital formation. D. Subbarao,RBI governor, paved the way for accelerating growth momentum. Now it’s the government’s turn to move forward on economic reforms. Opposition parties should join forces and play a constructive role to make our democracy more healthy. Indians have accepted that fuel prices are likely to remain the cause of inflation. Acceleration of growth is the only way out.

Chew on the idea

KUDOS to the Australian government for having the courage to fight for the health of its citizens in spite of tremendous pressure from the tobacco lobby (‘Tobacco giants fight Oz laws’,IE,April 20). Cigarette packs sold in unattractive,logo-less packs with images of cancer-riddled mouths would definitely dissuade people from smoking. I conduct dental camps in villages. Once I was shocked to find an eight-year-old girl with a pre-cancerous white patch in her mouth,a result of chewing gutkha. Packaged with fancy names and endorsed by irresponsible celebrities, they are extremely popular with the youth.

Shame and fame

NOBODY could have described Partition with such tormenting pain as Saadat Hasan Manto did in “Toba Tek Singh” (‘One hundred years of Manto’,IE,April 20). Like other great personalities,Manto was not spared of criticism. A man who is not criticised,is one who never did anything.

What’s dirty?

THE decision of the information and broadcasting ministry to telecast The Dirty Picture late at night is shocking. The censor board cleared the movie,it ran successfully all over the country and many have seen it in cinema halls. Then what is the harm in telecasting the movie

at prime time?
