Deserted state
* The editorial Rudderless in Jaipur (IE,November 18) has aptly brought out the pathetic state of governance in Rajasthan. Every department higher education, law and order, infrastructure is in a tailspin. This reshuffle is not going to make much difference; it is a smokescreen for fallacies. There is a severe leadership crisis in the state and a total bankruptcy of ideas. Rajasthan requires a major surgery, this patchwork wont do.

Media counsel
* This refers to Ansari for white paper on media regulation (IE,November 17). The media hounded Press Council of India chairman Justice Markandey Katju for his view that the media must be made responsible to an external body. Every time there is any talk of external regulation of the media,it is vehemently opposed and self-regulation is promised. Obviously,it is a ploy to avoid accountability. The broadcast media in particular must have an external regulator.

Pointing fingers
* This refers to NREGS: Jairam writes to Maya again (IE,November 18). Irregularities in the disbursement of NREGS funds have been reported from time to time. Reports show that the worst offenders are Congress-ruled Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Therefore,Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Rameshs suggestion that the irregularities in the implementation of this scheme in BSP-ruled UP should be investigated by the CBI smacks of political partisanship. In fact, his ministry should come out with a white paper on the functioning of this scheme, showing whether it has benefited the rural poor at all. If it has not,the minister should plug the loopholes in its implementation.

Fourgo the idea
* The proposal by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati to divide the state into four new states is a political stunt. What makes her propose this split when the UP assembly elections are just a few months away? It shows she is afraid of the forthcoming elections.

Big chill
* The editorial Winter session blues (IE,November 11) was a strong reminder not only to UPA 2 but also to the entire nation that unless we take remedial steps our economic situation may further worsen. To salvage the situation, reform measures,as you have said, are absolutely necessary. Are we going to see them happen?
