Custody battles

* This refers to ‘Trial Run’ (IE,May 24). Seeing Kanimozhi,A. Raja and Suresh Kalmadi behind the bars is possibly reassuring for the people. But justice does not end here. It is likely that they may be out of prison sooner than later, hence it becomes all the more critical that they all are,if guilty, convicted of their crimes. As rightly pointed out, interim custody does not do any justice at all.

* The ISI has succeeded in protecting militant outfits that are against India, but has miserably failed in detecting Osama,or the possibility of a US raid,in Abbottabad. Similarly, they were taken unawares when Pakistan naval air base was attacked. It is clear the ISI is not doing what it is supposed to. In his deposition before the court,David Headley has said the ISI was involved in masterminding the 26/11attack,thus confirming India’s suspicions. More surprises may be in store for Pakistan if it continues to nurture terrorists.

Act now

* Pakistan’s political leadership and army patronised terrorists and used terror as their state policy against India and Afghanistan. If the Taliban have turned into a Frankenstein’s monster and are now bent upon destroying its creator,Pakistan has none to blame but itself. What the world in general and India and America in particular must worry about is the nuclear arsenal of Pakistan (‘Lethal stuff lying around,Pak internal threat worries Delhi’,IE,May 24). The danger of the Taliban gaining access to Pakistan’s nukes has never been as real as it is today. The US should give serious thought to this and act before it is too late.

Loyal to the king?

* The editorial ‘Casual, insensitive’ (IE,May 23) has rightly taken to task the National Commission for Women for its hasty conclusions on the alleged incidents of rape in Bhatta-Parsaul. The common perception about such government institutions is that they are partial to or is the mouthpiece of the powers that be. That these institutions are often headed by favourites of the ruling party lends further credence to the suspicion that they are more loyal than the king. This real or perceived belief is proving to be detrimental to their credibility.

Time’s up

* As Karnataka governor,H.R. Bhardwaj has certainly tried to misuse his position in recommending to the Centre the dismissal of the state government (‘Call him back’,IE,May 24). The Centre took the right decision in quashing his recommendation. For one,the Congress would not want to earn the wrath of the BJP which would have then started a nationwide stir against the dismissal of its government. The continuance of Bhardwaj as Karnataka governor is certainly not a good idea.
