Catch them first

* I was really amused by the satirical editorial ‘Our nanny, our state’ (IE,June 17). One really wonders as to why diversionary tactics are being adopted by the Maharashtra government, saying that the “attack on a journalist must be made a non-bailable offence”,instead of asking the Mumbai police to get hold of journalist J. Dey’s killers. It’s a shame the CM is shielding the state police for its failures. Making such a law is an exercise in distracting the public from the real issue of catching the culprits

Colonels of wrath

* Ayesha Siddiqa’s ‘The general will take questions’ (IE,June 17) was interesting. Our western neighbour has come to this pass, which was a kind of “work in progress”,because between the generals, from Ayub to Kayani, and the Americans there was no room for a thought as to Pakistan’s image. Kayani has perhaps realised very late that his ranks are so totally radicalised that he couldn’t even publicly condemn the assassinations of two federal ministers. Osama bin Laden was found in Abbottabad, and the military just celebrated the arrests of five CIA informants on bin Laden. The general’s credibility has been undone, and he too may be undone by his “colonels”,instead of generals, for a change.

Not by rates alone

* The spike in interest rates is going to hit the corporate world hard, which is really sad (‘Our main worry is inflation, not growth’,IE,June 17). This is a double blow as demand too would slow down. Not only will profits come down but there may also be job losses and increasing unemployment. Checking inflation is fine, but the mechanism seems to be wrong. Interest rate hikes affect the poor the most as the rich in fact stand to gain as their savings earn bigger interests. The RBI needs to change its strategy.

You,PM

* Digvijaya Singh has now come in the open supporting Rahul Gandhi’s claim to the prime ministership, although there are still three years to go for the next general elections. India is a country of 120 crore people. They are capable of electing a candidate who may become PM. Under the circumstances,Singh’s sycophantic pronouncements are not understandable. Does he want to secure himself a seat in the 2114 cabinet already?

(Un)civil egos

* The efforts of civil society representatives for ushering in an effective Lokpal bill are laudable. However, their present adamant stand on the inclusion of the PM and the higher judiciary gives one the feeling that they have forgotten their original mission and got stuck on their egos. They should understand that negotiation is not a one-way street. In any case, the draft being prepared is not a final legislation.
