* The MPLAD and MLALAD funds pass through various levels before work begins. This is not just cumbersome but promotes corruption. By scrapping MLALAD and taking responsibility directly in his hands,Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has set a bold example. This will not only simplify the process but also ensure uninterrupted development.

Change,in waves

* This refers to ‘The Verdict’ (IE,May13). The verdict shows the people voted for “Maa Mati Manush” to build a new West Bengal. Shekhar Gupta,in ‘Writings on the wall’ (IE,May 11,12),precisely analysed the problems in communist-ruled Bengal. The perfect picture of CPM-rule was the watch repairer’s shop. The communists failed and were incapable of accepting change.

* The assembly poll results have a message for the people, the parties and the politicians. West Bengal voted with emotion while Tamil Nadu did so with studied poise. In both, the push for change has been massive. But J. Jayalalithaa has pipped Mamata Banerjee with a more stunning margin. While Mamata had to shed sweat to oust the Left, the AIADMK was given power on a platter by the DMK that collapsed under its own failings.

This is a lesson for parties to not dally with corruption. In Assam, credit must go to Tarun Gogoi, who wins a third term. His maturity and dexterity won the day. The Left must have learnt that pure ideology operating from politburos without ground-level corrections will not guarantee perennial success. Bengal has paid dearly for this, whereas in Kerela,V.S. Achuthanadan, with his feet rooted to the ground, almost pulled it off for them.

The content and shape of politics in India, particularly of the regional variety, are extremely sensitive to actual progress on socio-economic parameters. In this age of information, public perceptions can no longer be moulded by political rhetoric alone.

Wrong reason

* The statement by Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Congress party’s in-charge in Tamil Nadu, that corruption is not the reason for the defeat of the DMK-Congress combine, needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. Azad should then spell out the reason. India’s premier political party now has to make do with crumbs thrown at it by satraps in some states.

Chinese whispers

* This refers to the editorial ‘The Beijing card’ (IE,May 12). It’s well-known that China is knitting a web to encircle and trap India from all sides. It has been moving strategically with our neighbours. But our security is strangely ignored by all those concerned.

It goes without saying that the intent and recent actions of China amply indicate that all is not well and we must do everything possible to guard against disturbing developments.
