Black mark

* APROPOS ‘Grid indiscipline’ (IE,July 31),states should be subjected to a market-based system, not only to prevent such electricity crises but also to make the distribution system more efficient. Illegal hooking to power lines is rampant. Several Central plans for providing power leave scope for misuse. An irrational system prevails in both the production and distribution of power.

* IF THIS government is of the people, for the people,by the people, then Anna Hazare’s demand of passing a strong Lokpal Bill needs to be revisited (‘Won’t talk with anyone, even PM,says Hazare’,IE,August 1). Clearly, the people are dissatisfied with the present dispensation. All the recent by-election results reveal that the Congress-led government stands on shaky ground. The party is confounded by various problems in the states and a weak Centre is unable to cope. As it stands,Team Anna is going to act tough. The Central government should act fast before the situation goes out of hand.

Empty vessels

* THE SO-CALLED mass movement of Anna Hazare and his team has become stale and increasingly incapable of moving beyond its anti-government rhetoric, which only gets more shrill and confused as days go by (‘Team Anna goes soft on Ramdev’,IE,July 31). It has sent out mixed signals about its stand on figures like Narendra Modi,Ramdev and Pranab Mukherjee and maintained focus on corruption only within the UPA. All this indicates a movement gone awry. Add to that a sense of paranoia, alleging government imposition on the media. Pulling crowds by criticising the government is easy and no measure of the movement’s worth. It is merely a question of tapping into the angst of the common people. The group’s judgmental attitude and arrogance will be its own ruin.

* I DO not think Union Railways Minister Mukul Roy should resign over the Tamil Nadu Express fire(‘Tamil Nadu Express: Rail Minister hints at sabotage as 47 charred to death’,IE,July 30). The minister should not bear all the blame for the tragedy.

* APROPOS ‘Miles to go’ (IE,July 31) by M.M. Ansari,it is disturbing to see how corruption has seeped into education. Government should take stern action against persons guilty of such practices. It has become fashionable for institutions to spend enormous amounts to advertise on television about the attractive prospects they offer. If only they could match the promises they make.
