With reference to your editorial ‘Between the ayes’ (IE,August 27),the consensus between the Congress and the BJP is worthy of note. By supporting the bill, the BJP has come of age. It stands to lose nothing but will gain the goodwill of people who believe that the role of opposition parties isn’t necessarily opposing for its own sake. In an atmosphere where politicians and parties are losing relevance because of their opportunistic behaviour,a whiff of positive and constructive thinking can really make the difference.

Apropos ‘Front for Left’ (IE,August 24),the BJP has indeed been contradicting itself — but that’s nothing new. The BJP in power is quite different from when it isn’t. Ram Setu, the nuclear deal,Ram Janmabhoomi — the party turns its coat on many major issues. On the nuclear liability bill,it was once so hardline. But ever since Amit Shah’s name started doing the rounds for the worst reasons, its stance became negotiation rather than remonstration. That its overnight allergy to Jaswant Singh changed to a mutual longing too is a story in itself.

Why then do we complain that the Congress has started living in the bygone days of single-party rule? When you have an opposition that lacks any ground to stand on,which has neither a clear ideology nor a leadership to which the common man can listen, you are doomed to get a government that will just pass through its tenure,as in the past.

Go Vedanta

This refers to ‘Digging for facts’ (IE,August 25). The decision of the government to withdraw the bauxite mining clearance given to Vedanta is certainly not justified. It only reflects that the government at the Centre is not strong. If the project of making aluminium is not to be allowed to go ahead, then why was a green signal given to it in the first place? Abandoning a project that ensured development and employment is certainly a cruel joke. The government should ignore those who do not want the state of Orissa to progress.

One-man army

Virender Sehwag is a one-man army. His swashbuckling century literally put India in the tri-series final in Sri Lanka. He’s the only player who has been performing consistently in Sri Lanka, and without doubt is one of the best one-day batsmen today. Sehwag is the hardest hitter in international cricket,a utility player as he even chips in with the ball when required apart from being an excellent fielder. He is a total team player. While the likes of Tendular or Ponting get the limelight,Sehwag is a magician on the field.
