Another slate

* This refers to the editorial ‘Fever pitch’ (IE,March 28). Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has done well by inviting the Pakistani leadership to the India vs Pakistan World Cup semi-final. He has cashed in on an opportunity to give peace yet another chance through cricket diplomacy. Adamant attitudes should be discarded and talks be held in a cordial atmosphere. Previous attempts at such cricket diplomacy haven’t been successful though, perhaps because Pakistan was represented by military dictators then. But now,Pakistan has a popularly elected civilian government.

* The prime minister’s invitation to Pakistan’s leadership is nothing but a waste of time and money. If the PM believes by inviting Pakistani leaders India will able to improve relations with its neighbour, then he is mistaken,as such efforts haven’t produced results in the past. Despite repeated reminders from India,Pakistan hasn’t brought the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice. Islamabad has also consistently ignored India’s request to dismantle terror camps in PoK. Dr Singh is making a mistake by ignoring the sentiments of many Indians by entertaining Pakistani leaders. National interest should prevail over the love of cricket.

Mumbai lethargy

* The editorial ‘No-clearance CM’ (IE,March 28) has aptly advised Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to decentralise his powers and ensure transparency and independence in the functioning of institutions for solving Mumbai’s chronic problems, not least the housing shortage. But it’s to be noted that Mumbai is proving to be the unmaking of some CMs,efficient or otherwise, partly because of their own inertia and partly because of receiving conflicting signals and directions from various quarters. Chavan needs to get cracking if he wants to be an exception to this syndrome.

Season of plenty

* It is surprising that the pre-poll largesse offered by the DMK and the AIADMK to residents of Tamil Nadu should invite such national attention. Or is it envy? Tamil Nadu is a prosperous state and can afford gifts for its residents, irrespective of the political party in power. Nitish Kumar couldn’t venture beyond bicycles. Delhi is overflowing with funds. Around poll time,it can regularise unauthorised colonies and gift land wholesale. In Karnataka, the ruler of the day de-notifies government land or leases out mines to his loyal courtiers. Punjab, though a power-deficient and near bankrupt state, offers free electricity. In Bengal,in keeping with its drained coffers, the Trinamool distributes only hope. The Left can only distribute tickets — to new faces. When Warren Buffett advocates philanthropy, there’s an appreciative nod all around. Why should it be any different when parties practise it,wealth — borrowed or otherwise — permitting?
