Age,in general

* The dispute over the date of birth of the army chief has taken a turn, with his petition reaching the Supreme Court (‘Army Chief goes to SC: When was I born?’ IE,January 17). Mentioning false birth dates to meet the stringent criterion of age for admission was rampant in the 1950s and ‘60s. When the choice is between embroiling the nation’s army in a controversy and being flexible about the date of retirement of its chief, the latter should get precedence. The government should settle the dispute out of court.

* Here are two headlines: ‘Half of class 5 kids can’t read class 2 texts’ and ‘Six from Bihar village school clear Maths Olympiad’ (IE,January 17). This proves our country has talented children, but wrong policies and inefficient people are messing with education.

* After the PISA report,I was not too surprised to read ‘Half of class 5 kids can’t read class 2 texts’. It is high time the government woke up to this shameful fact and took concrete steps to arrest this trend. HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has to put in extra effort instead of simply saying the responsibility of education lay “squarely” with the states.

It’s a tough life

* Apropos ‘Half of Class 5 kids can’t read Class 2 texts’,we are looking at it all wrong. These kids who are able to read Class 2 texts would be nowhere without the education programme they are now part of. In parts of India, life is a challenge. Kids who achieve a decent percentage of marks battling all odds must not be pitted against the privileged.

* This refers to ‘Caste-ing aspersions’ (IE,January 17),which has rightly criticised the Election Commission and Mayawati. Clearly, the EC has erred in its highly expensive exercise to cover the statues erected by Mayawati. Times have changed and voters just don’t get influenced by a party symbol; they look at the performance of a party and its candidates. Mayawati’s accusation — that the EC is “casteist” — is preposterous. The EC is doing a good,

impartial job.

Outrageous

* The selection of Wendy Doniger’s Hindus: An Alternative History for the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award for the best non-fiction book is intriguing and outrageous. No doubt, eminent persons were members of the jury, but they seem to have been oblivious to the hurt that Doniger’s book has caused to thinking and practising Hindus. It is full of malicious sarcasm, perverted interpretation of things sacred to many Hindus and insulting innuendos.
