On the first anniversary of 26/11 the media space is flooded with stories, reports and recollections about the Mumbai attacks. Does this apparent concern regarding terrorism match our capability to fight it? It is more than a question of security preparedness and sound intelligence. Are we morally strong enough to force the perpetrators to think twice before contemplating attacks? When disrespect for the Constitution, pursuit of power on sectional lines and misuse of political office for personal gain acquire normalcy at the cost of genuine issues,it becomes a moral challenge for a country as big and diverse like India.

The old tag of justice delayed still prevails. A sense of fear and terror amongst the family members of the victims is still seen, due to an undue delay in a sentence being passed on the lone surviving perpetrator,Ajmal Amir Kasab. India should learn a lesson from the Australian courts’ recent speedy trial of those who committed racial attacks.

Javed Anand’s ‘A conditional charity’ (IE,November 19) is based on assumptions, not facts. Without citing any evidence,he attributes a Muslim charity’s enforcement of a strict code of conduct on the Muslim victims of Gujarat riots it rehabilitated to televangelist Zakir Naik. Thankfully,he admits that he’s assuming when he writes,“Since IRF (Islamic Relief Foundation, run by Naik) is the screening body (for a scholarship scheme),it is reasonable to assume that the would-be grantee must match up to the sponsor’s brand of an intolerant Islam. So here is free tuition to future aspirants on IRF’s ‘model answers’ to frequently asked questions…”. Don’t most scholarships require certain criteria to be fulfilled by an aspirant? Can Anand cite any communal incident directly caused by a word Zakir has uttered? Rather,Naik invites leaders of other faiths and debates them before an audience. There has never been any violence in such debates. Also, can this “liberal Muslim” kindly let moderate Muslims make their own choices and not tell us who

to listen to?

Delays,distortions

The Liberhan Commission report has highlighted the loopholes in our judicial system. One of the most important inquiry commissions of independent India has taken a whopping 17 years for just preparing its report. There is every reason to wonder how much more time the judiciary would take to punish the accused. Already many of them are dead. This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are any number of cases which take 15-20 years for a decision, and with the right to appeal in higher courts. The reason provided for this is the dearth of courts and personnel, that too in a country with such huge unemployment. It is imperative on our part to rectify this.
