Opinion A proud moment

The horrific terrorist attack on a Peshawar church was the sad trigger for O’Brien to tell the country the agonising story of his family’s Pakistani wing.

* This refers to ‘Two nations and a divided family’ by Derek O’Brien (IE,September 23). The horrific terrorist attack on a Peshawar church was the sad trigger for O’Brien to tell the country the agonising story of his family’s Pakistani wing. It was truly heartbreaking to read how the O’Brien family disintegrated. How male members of his father’s generation emigrated to the West and how female members converted to Islam. The article is a tribute to O’Brien’s great grandmother Nellie Bella’s foresight and wisdom. For her to have urged a young Derek to learn Bengali in order to integrate into the Kolkata mainstream while retaining his family’s distinct Anglo-Indian culture is a credit to her. O’Brien is rightly proud of being an Indian and is fortunate to have been nurtured

by “India’s Nellie” and “Nellie’s India”.

Not bothered

* During the last year or so,there has scarcely been a single national debate in which Narendra Modi has not made his opinion known. But there appears to be relative silence from him on the Muzaffarnagar riots. It is clear that Modi is uncomfortable about taking a stance on this major national issue. His absence at the National Integration Council meeting in New Delhi was interesting (‘NIC meeting is neither national nor integrated’,IE,September 24). The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate clearly thinks it unimportant to attend a national meeting on communal harmony.

* This refers to ‘Off track’ (IE,September 23). That the railways are contemplating an end to the practice of having doctors on board its Duronto Express trains is dismaying. I suffered a heart attack while on a long train journey and the doctor on board gave me life-saving injections that bought me time to travel up to Delhi, where I had to undergo emergency surgery. A few days prior to my journey, the doctor who treated me had treated a young pregnant woman. His register of patients indicated that he was handling several cases of food poisoning, asthma attacks and dysentery on each journey. If this facility is under-utilised it may be because people are unaware of its existence.

A different clean up

* Apropos ‘Poll Positions’ (IE,September 24),opinion polls should not be banned. They help politicians reconsider their strategies and get a feel of public opinion. The Election Commission would do better to clean up the electoral system in other ways.
