Three persons were killed in Bhavnagar district in clashes involving workers of the Congress and Janata Front, as the first phase of the Gujarat assembly election got underway. Mobs in Ahmedabad city targeted the houses of two Congress candidates. Early reports put polling at 50 per cent, as most urban areas, excluding Baroda and Surat, voted.
Oil price rise
Iran warned that an increase in oil prices was unavoidable to counter the loss of purchasing power incurred by petroleum-exporting countries as a result of inflation in the West. The governor of Iran’s central bank, Mohammed Yeganeh, said there would be no increase before October 1, when a nine-month freeze would end, as Opec had committed to not changing prices before then.
Rising Naxalism
An Indian Express survey based on reports from Bihar, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh blamed the indifference of state governments to the plight of poor tribals and frequent police interference on the side of the landlords during confrontations with sharecroppers for the rise in Naxalite violence. The deteriorating condition of the rural landless in these states revived social tensions. Repressive police action pushed tribals to the fold of the Naxalites, the report said.
Subsidy to go
The government proposed doing away with a cash subsidy on exports that had been in place since the devaluation of the rupee in 1966. Exporters would now be given larger “import entitlement”, the report said.
Vietnam’s new capital
Hanoi would be the capital of a unified Vietnam, a statement from the North Vietnamese Assembly said. The report described it as the most significant development since Saigon was liberated by North Vietnam forces on April 30.
