Indira on Emergency

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi said the government would do its best to sever the links of “reactionaries” with similar elements abroad. She brushed off criticism that “she had finished off democracy” with the imposition of the Emergency and alleged that “these were people who supported Yahya Khan in 1971”. “Opposition groups were planning a kind of programme for seizing power, bypassing our democratic methods. There were some among them who believed in non-violence, but there were also some who did not believe in it. So it [the Emergency] was necessary…” the PM said in an interview to a Bombay weekly.

Bihar arrests

The Bihar government arrested 111 persons, taking the total number of arrests since the proclamation of the Emergency to 903. Forty-five Anand Margis, 43 RSS workers, 21 Jamaat-e-Islami members and two Naxalites were arrested in the latest police action.

RSS dissolves unit

The RSS had dissolved its Kerala unit, a release from the banned outfit claimed. Members were asked not to engage in any organisational activity.

No exceptions

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah justified the extension of the Emergency to the state in the assembly. He said that when the Union government found it necessary to declare Emergency in the country, J&K, as part of India, could not become a “pocket of exception”.

Delhi-Bonn dialogue

A conclave of Indian and West German representatives in New Delhi called for a dialogue between industrialised countries and developing nations to solve the problems caused by the global situation. West German Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hans-Jürgen Wischnewski also met Indira Gandhi.
