A report said that in six weeks of campaigns against illegal encroachment on public land, the Delhi Municipal Corporation had partly or wholly demolished over 17,000 shops. Never before in Delhi had demolition been carried out on such a massive scale. The corporation was now faced with the problem of resettling those who had lost their livelihoods. Senior Congress leaders complained to Indira Gandhi that the families of many petty shopkeepers were suffering.

Musicologist dead

Vinayakrao Patwardhan, renowned musician and musicologist, died in Pune. One of the chief disciples of Vishnu Digamber Paluskar, Patwardhan, 78, was the founder of the Pune branch of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, which was set up by his guru. Patwardhan, an exponent of the Gwalior gharana, wrote several books on Hindustani music and was a singer-actor in Marathi theatre.

Martial Law

Bangladesh President Khandakar Mushtaq Ahmed promulgated martial law, providing for the maximum penalty of death, deportation for life and rigorous imprisonment extending up to 14 years for offences like illegal possession of arms, ammunition, property and corrupt practices and criminal misconduct. The regulations empowered the president to set up martial law courts, summary courts and appellate tribunals for the trial of the listed offences, and covered people from all walks of life, including the vice president, council of ministers, MPs, trade union leaders and functionaries at the lowest level of the administration.

Ex-ministers held

Several former ministers, including former vice president Nazrul Islam, former PM Mansoor Ali, ex-PM and finance minister Tajuddin Ahmed, were detained by the new Bangladesh government on various charges, Radio Bangladesh reported.
