The Centre issued an ordinance reducing the minimum bonus of workers to 4 per cent. The minimum bonus had been 8.33 per cent for the past two years.

Indira’s Jeeps
Shanti Bhushan, counsel for Raj Narain, MP, contended in the Supreme Court that the Allahabad High Court should have taken into consideration the expenses incurred by Indira Gandhi in running 23 jeeps in her constituency, Rae Bareli, for canvassing votes. The court had rejected these points raised by Narain while invalidating Gandhi’s election to the Lok Sabha in 1971. It had concluded there was no evidence to back the allegation regarding the jeeps. It also said even if the costs of running the jeeps were added to the expenses, it would not exceeded Rs 35,000, the limit under the election law.

Naga Special Status
The Governor of the northeastern states, L.P. Singh, said talks between the Centre and the Nagaland Peace Council were taking place on the ground that the constitutional claim that Nagaland was an integral part of India was inviolate and unalterable, and there could be no compromise on that. He added the Chedema talks were moving in the right direction. Singh ruled out giving any special status to Nagaland. “Nagaland already enjoyed a special status under the Constitution wherein certain special safeguards had been provided, which were not applicable to other states,” he said.

The Los Angeles Times.
