Punjab was placed under President’s rule to enable the Union government to deal directly with the violence and other extremist activities in the state which had suddenly become explosive in the last few days. President Zail Singh signed the proclamation declaring President’s rule in Punjab . The state has also been declared as a disturbed area giving wider powers to the state administration to take strong measures.

Extremism in Punjab

Terrorists struck hard in Punjab, gunning down at least eight persons and injuring another half a dozen in two separate ghastly incidents. Unidentified terrorists who boarded a Delhi-bound private deluxe bus from Amritsar stopped the bus near the Beas railway station overbridge and asked the driver to take it to Jadna village in Kapurthala district. The passengers were separated and then they opened fire on 11 members of one community.

About 4,000 people marched through the Punjab capital of Lahore in a protest against Pakistan’s military rule called by lawyers from around the country. They said workers, students and other Lahore residents joined a procession of about 2,000 lawyers marching to the provincial martial law headquarters to demand free elections and a return to democracy.

An Indian in space

Squadron Leader Rakesh Sharma, a crack test pilot of the Indian Air Force has been selected to be the first Indian to fly in space. Sharma will make the historic flight in a Soyuz spacecraft along with two Soviet cosmonauts in April 1984. Wing Commander Ravish Malhotra, the other IAF pilot currently undergoing cosmonaut training at the Yuri Gagarin Space Centre will be in the three-man back-up crew for this flight.
