Opinion October 30, 1985, Forty Years Ago: Tax Officials Retired
The Union Finance Ministry has compulsorily retired four commissioners of income tax and action has been initiated against four others. The retirements were effected under fundamental rule 56 (J), which empowers the Government to retire officials on attainment of 50 years of age.
The Punjab Chief Minister, Surjit Singh Barnala, said the state government could not withdraw cases investigated and prosecuted by the Central Bureau of Investigation. The Union Finance Ministry has compulsorily retired four commissioners of income tax and action has been initiated against four others. The retirements were effected under fundamental rule 56 (J), which empowers the Government to retire officials on attainment of 50 years of age. Highly placed ministry sources said a list of 30 commissioners of income-tax (CIT) has been drawn up for action. Sixteen inspecting assistant commissioners (IAC) have been picked up for dismissal. Over 100 income-tax officers have also been listed for action to give the department what ministry circles described as a “clean and efficient” image.
Barnala on CBI Cases
The Punjab Chief Minister, Surjit Singh Barnala, said the state government could not withdraw cases investigated and prosecuted by the Central Bureau of Investigation. The Chief Minister was replying to a supplementary on his statement in the Vidhan Sabha on a call attention notice of Kirpal Singh (Janata Party) concerning the reported statement of the Prime Minister that the persons involved in confrontation with the Army would not be freed.
Fishermen Robbed
Sri Lankan naval personnel attacked an Indian fishing boat well within Indian territorial waters and seized 10 kg of prawns from the boat. Two fishermen, Sahul Hameed and Natesan, who were on the boat, suffered injuries during the attack.
Congress Leader Killed
Two suspected terrorists shot dead Yash Paul, a Congress (I) leader of Naushehra Pannuan in Amritsar district, a report received in Chandigarh said. Yash Paul, who was proceeding to Tarn Taran on a scooter, was attacked near Pidi village. Paul, a trader, died on the spot. The assailants escaped on his scooter. Senior police officials have reached the scene.
