This is the front page of The Indian Express published on October 17, 1983. About 100,000 Muslim worshippers battled Israeli troops in Southern Lebanon. Five vehicles were set ablaze and the troops fired at the crowd, killing or wounding 10 persons. The clash came barely hours after Sheikh Mohammed Shamsseddin, spiritual leader of the Muslim Shiites, declared “civil resistance” in the predominantly Shiite south against Israeli occupation.
Opposition Hits Back
S Chandra Shekhar, Janata Party President, sharply reacted to the accusations Prime Minister Indira Gandhi levelled against the Opposition. He asserted there was nothing wrong in the opposition parties trying to overthrow the government. While he did not think that Emergency would be imposed again, he said the PM might try to impose a mini-emergency like the one in Punjab.
Blast In Punjab
Two persons were injured in a bomb explosion in Durga Mandir in Ludhiana and one person was injured in a shoot-out in Amritsar district. Two assailants reportedly sporting trimmed beards lobbed a grenade into the central hall of the temple about 25 feet inside the main entrance.
Maharashtra Riots
Four persons were killed, three of them in police firing, and about 30 others injured as rioting broke out near a place of worship in Maharashtra. Heavy stone-throwing on a Duasehra procession led to the riot and police firing. At least one person died in the riot. In the firing, two persons died on the spot and one in hospital. Ten others were hospitalised with bullet injuries.
