More than 55 persons have been arrested so far in the combing operations launched by the police, the Border Security Force and the Central Reserve Police Force against terrorists and anti-social elements in Punjab. The operation was extended to Patiala district where 13 persons, mostly Akali Dal workers, were arrested from Bassi Pathana.

Sri Lanka’s claims

The recent developments in Sri Lanka affecting the Tamil minority there came into focus in the United Nations with a clash between India and Sri Lanka in which India rejected allegations of interference in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka. The issue was raised by India in the Special Political Committee during consideration of its agenda item concerning international co-operation to avert new flows of refugees.

Curfew in Bihar

At least two persons were killed and 21 injured in police firing in Khagaria town in north Bihar leading to the imposition of curfew there. The police resorted to firing after it failed to disperse an angry mob that surrounded and allegedly stoned the police station. The mob was protesting against a clash between some policemen and shopkeepers over payment of groceries bought by
the latter.

Sino-Indian talks

The Indian government came out with a statement saying it will approach the Sino-Indian talks with a constructive spirit. The 67-word statement is conciliatory in tone, and tends to convey to the Chinese that while India is prepared to explore possibilities of improvement of relations in several spheres, the resolution of the boundary question has to remain central in the Sino-Indian dialogue.
