However, the amended resolution by Southall Shiromani Akali Dal president, Giani Amolak Singh, calling upon the Indian government to implement the Anandpur Resolution on the Punjab issue was passed by an overwhelming majority.
Bus Accident Kills 40
Forty people, including seven women and seven children, were electrocuted when a private bus came into contact with high-tension electric wires near Allahabad. Another 40 passengers, however, escaped death by jumping out of the right side of the bus. The rest were killed as they jumped over a wire which had snapped and fallen on the left side of the vehicle.
India-Europe Panel
India and the European Economic Community (EEC) have agreed that a working group of their joint commission will examine in depth whether market access for some Indian products can be improved. This was one outcome of the two-day meeting of the Indo-EEC Joint Commission. Ivor Richard, leader of the EEC delegation, said that the EEC would consider specific projects on agriculture, energy and high technologyfrom India for funding by the European Investment Bank.
Sri Lanka Stalemate
India wants the stalemate in Sri Lanka to end so that a lasting solution can be found to the ethnic problem there. External Affairs Minister P V Narasimha Rao said that India hoped that serious endeavours would be made to break the existing stalemate at the all-party conference. Failure to seize this opportunity is likely to aggravate ethnic tensions.
