Punjab violence
Punjab has been advised a major shake-up in the police set-up, strengthening of its intelligence network and rigorous steps against the extremists. The state Chief Secretary, K D Vasudeva, and the Director-General of the Police, C K Sawhny, were called by the Union Home Ministry in New Delhi to discuss arrangements for putting a halt to the deteriorating law and order situation in the state due to extremist activities and series of bomb explosions at a large number of places.
Orissa Assembly
Abuses were hurled at the chair, shoes were shown and the Deputy Speaker rushed back to his chamber as the Orissa Assembly was plunged into chaos for the third day. As opposition members pursued Deputy Speaker H S Padhy, Congress (I) members rushed to his help and it was difficult for some time to know what was going on in the House. The trouble began when Padhy asked Housing and Urban Development Minister B K Biswal to reply to an opposition adjournment motion on the reported non-completion of houses being built for the flood-hit people of Bolangir district.
Colombia earthquake
About 100 people were killed in Popayan when an earthquake rocked south-western Colombia, municipal police announced. The centre of Popayan, a city of some 600,000 inhabitants, was totally destroyed in the quake, which registered seven degrees on the Richter scale, according to the Geophysics Institute in Bogota.
