A government official said that strict measures would be taken against traders illegally hoarding onions or charging more than the government rate. (Representational Photo/PTI) In a bid to check the rising price of onions across the state, the Tripura government has reopened fair price shops on Friday.
In Tripura, onion prices have shot up from Rs 30 per kg to Rs 80 per kg over the last few weeks.
Speaking to reporters, a senior official from the food and civil supplies department at Sadar sub-division said that fair price shops for onions were opened at Maharajganj Bazaar in Agartala city, where consumers can purchase at Rs 55 per kg and those buying over 5 kg can get it at Rs 51 per kg.
“The fair price shop was started by the local market committee. Similar outlets are being opened in other markets as well. We hope that this will check the inflation,” the official added.
Explaining the rise in prices, the official informed that onions are purchased from outside the state and an increase in prices at the origin markets, like ones in Nashik, in turn leads to an increase here as well. The official said that steps to check this price-rise was planned but got deferred because of the festive season.
He further stated that strict measures would be taken against traders illegally hoarding onions or charging more than the government rate. “The price restriction and fair price shops will continue till the situation becomes normal,” he added.
In August, similar shops were opened to provide relief to consumers.
