Under the Merchandise Export from India Scheme (MEIS), onion exporters were eligible for a five per cent rebate for the onions they exported. However, the scheme was suspended in June 2019 due to the steady rise in retail and wholesale prices in the country.

In many urban areas, onion prices had traded well above the Rs 100 per kg mark. India had imported 36,000 tonne of onions, of which around 18,500 tonne had arrived by mid January.

Paswan said the central government had decided to import 41,950-metric tonne (MT) onions through state-owned MMTC to reduce prices and augment availability; of this, 12,000 MT has arrived and the rest is expected to arrive by the end of January.

In metros, the retail price of onion was ruling at Rs 120 /kg Kolkata, at Rs 102/kg in Delhi and Mumbai and at Rs 80/kg in Chennai, as per the data maintained by the consumer affairs ministry.

Punjab’s farmers now mainly grow PRO-6 and Punjab Naroya. Both are red-coloured varieties, the former ready to harvest in 120 days after transplanting and yielding 175 quintals per acre on an average, with these at 145 days and 150 quintals, respectively, for the latter.

On Thursday, retail prices of onion was Rs 160 per kg in Chennai, Rs 150 per kg in Pune, Rs 140 per kg in Mumbai, and Rs 100 per kg in Delhi, according to data on the National Horticulture Board portal.
