After the girls’ families complained to the Birganj police, Malarai Jamatia was arrested (Representational) Two days after a college student was gang-raped on the outskirts of Agartala, two minor tribal girls were gang-raped in Tripura’s Gomati district on Wednesday, police said.
Assistant inspector-general (law and order) Jyotishman Das Chowdhury told reporters that the minor girls had come from a village in South Tripura district to Chechua in Ampi to attend a Baisakhi Mela, where they met one Malarai Jamatia, who is a Facebook friend of one of them.
“The girls were lured away from the mela premises to a nearby rubber plantation on a two-wheeler. Seven-eight other men who were waiting there also raped them,” he said.
Jamatia allegedly took the girls to Amarpur later and left them the next morning. After the girls’ families complained to the Birganj police, Jamatia was arrested. A search is underway for the other accused in the case.
In a separate incident, a 46-year old man allegedly tried to rape a 13-year-old girl on Thursday when she was alone in her house in Dhalai district. He fled when her mother arrived.
Chief Minister Manik Saha said Friday that his government would ensure that people involved in such crimes are dealt with strictly as per law. “There should be absolutely zero tolerance for such crimes. These incidents are happening across the world and different states. These are instances of a twisted mentality. We will ensure that those involved are punished and that the law takes its own course,” he said.
Meanwhile, even as protests continued over Monday’s gangrape of the college student, police said a third suspect was arrested in the case. AIG Chowdhury said 45-year-old Laxman Paul was arrested on charge of aiding and abetting one of the other two accused people.
